Course Description

This webinar will explore right hemisphere brain damage (RHD) and the speech-language services that people with RHD may need to address cognitive-communication impairments. The webinar will address overcoming barriers to individuals with RHD receiving SLP services, evidence-based practices and tools for assessing and treating RHD, and ideas for improving assessment and treatment across the continuum of care.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Describe the communication (apragmatism) and cognitive deficits that may be seen in RHD 
  • Discuss the potential impact of cultural and linguistic differences on the assessment of communication and cognition in people with RHD 
  • Describe standardized and nonstandardized assessment methods/tools for RHD 
  • Describe how the evidence-based practice diamond can be used to inform treatment for RHD 
  • Use Goal Attainment Scaling to co-create goals for a person with apragmatism due to RHD

Presenter Information

Melissa Johnson, PhD, CCC-SLP (she/her/hers) is an Associate Professor at Nazareth College, where she teaches and provides clinical education in the area of neurogenic communication disorders. Her current research interests are in discourse and prosody in right hemisphere brain damage (RHD) and music/speech therapy co-treatment of people with aphasia.
