This webinar will cover what audiologists and SLPs need to understand about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Speakers will identify who is subject to these laws as well as their regulatory and other compliance requirements. Learners will gain insights into the basic principles of both laws as well as potential pitfalls in their professional practice. Presenter Information

Caroline Bergner, Esq. (she/her/hers) is ASHA’s director of health care policy for Medicaid. She serves ASHA’s membership by answering member questions; tracking Medicaid policies; and advocating with Medicaid state agencies, Medicaid managed care companies, and CMS. She also works with ASHA’s Committee on Medicaid and the State Advocates for Reimbursement network. She is a Virginia-barred attorney and has worked in health care policy for more than 10 years.

Bill Knudsen currently serves as the Director of Education Policy for ASHA. Prior to ASHA, Bill served in various leadership and policy roles for organizations ranging from the U.S. Department of Education and a state education agency to the United States Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Bill began his career working for a school district in California.
