Description:

This webinar will explore alternative access methods in early childhood along with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), with a focus on switch access. The speaker will discuss a total access approach assigning meaning to all communication attempts, increasing social interactions and acceptance, and presuming competence for the youngest learners. The webinar will share examples of play-based learning activities that SLPs can customize to meet a child’s unique interests and passions while focusing on alternative access methods.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Describe alternative access methods for young children who use AAC, as well as opportunities for implementation through play, social, literacy, curriculum, and motor tasks within the preschool classroom setting
  • Design at least three innovative, accessible play opportunities within the preschool classroom, using alternative access methods including switch access 
  • Identify three strategies to support inclusion within the preschool classroom, focusing on communication and play opportunities with peers

Presenter Information

Mary Katherine Dally, MS, CCC-SLP, ATP, has served as the SLP on an ALS clinic focusing on AAC evaluations, voice banking, and no-tech/low-tech communication. She then worked as a solutions consultant for a communication device company, traveling the West side of Ohio. Currently, Katherine works as an assistive technology consultant through an educational service center and works in a preschool program as a speech-language pathologist. She presents at local and national conferences and has a passion for alternative access and accessible play.
