A Music-Based Online Intervention to Support Early Communication Development: Evidence From a Team-Based Approach (PD102904)

Course Description

In this presentation, a multidisciplinary team including an SLP, Music Therapist and Edtech developer describes the creation of Sing and Speak 4 Kids (SS4Kids), an innovative music-based program to support speech and language development in young children with various impairments. In describing the research and clinical background of SS4Kids, the team explains the lessons learned, including the dynamics, challenges, and successes over 15 years to develop a successful evidence-based online program for integrated professional and in-home facilitation. The presentation discusses in-program progress tracking, quantitative data graphics, focus group, and user feedback, and includes video examples of program usage. Presenters discuss clinical implementation and implications.

Presenter Information

Dr. Hayoung Lim, PhD, is a professor of music therapy, and director of Music Therapy Clinic at Oral Roberts University. She is a Licensed Professional Music Therapist by the state of Oklahoma. Her research focuses on music therapy for children with ASD and patients with neurologic disorders, music-based memory training for dementia, and music-centered psychotherapy. Dr. Lim is editor-in-chief of Journal of Scholarship of Teaching & Learning for Christians in Higher Education, and Director of Science of Sing & Speak 4 Kids.

Dr. Erica Ellis, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Cal State LA. She studies early language development and disorders, influences of environmental factors in development, and interventions related to parent and caregiver coaching. She is also the Cal State LA NSSLHA Chapter advisor, working to support students and evaluate programs related to CSD teaching and learning.

David Sonnenschein received his BA in neurobiology and music from U.C.S.D. and his MFA in cinema/TV from U.S.C. He is the Founder and CEO of iQsonics, an Edtech/mHealth researcher and developer of musical games that enhance cognitive, social, and creative skills. David is author of “Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice and Sound Effects in Cinema,” and has taught in international conferences, universities, and professional institutes. His musical career spans symphony clarinetist, jazz, world music, and didgeridoo sound healing.
