Description:

This webinar will discuss ways to foster the development of evidence-based IEPs (individualized education programs) when targeting feeding and swallowing in the public-school setting. The webinar will include a discussion of evidence-based interventions that promote student success. The speaker will address working with related professionals and interprofessional practice opportunities within and beyond the school setting to enhance student outcomes. The speaker will also provide strategies for family-centered care and culturally responsive practices.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Identify evidence-based interventions and services that should be included in the development of an IEP
  • Apply culturally responsive practices during IEP development
  • Identify three strategies that support interprofessional collaboration and family-centered care when developing IEPs for pediatric feeding disorder and dysphagia

Presenter Information

Kristen West, EdD, CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor and Assistant Chair in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at PennWest University-Edinboro. In addition, she is a doctoral candidate at Slippery Rock University. Clinically, Kristen has experience in a variety of pediatric settings including early intervention, pediatric acute care, outpatient, and school-based services. Prior to joining PennWest, she helped establish a public-school safe feeding program and served as a safe feeding consultant for the same educational agency. Currently, she serves on various committees within ASHA, Feeding Matters, and PSHA. Kristen has presented at the local, state, and national levels on the topic of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders.
