ASHA Learning Pass

The recently revised CDC developmental milestones have raised concerns about a “wait and see” approach to identifying children at an early age who may need intervention. This is particularly relevant for toddlers who may be diagnosed as “late talkers,” particularly with regard to determining which children will “catch up” from those who will need direct intervention. This session presents phonological profiles of expected development for children 18-36 months using a developmentally appropriate assessment tool, Profiles for Early Expressive Phonological Skills (PEEPS).

Content Disclosure: This session describes the development of a test of early phonological skills that is based on age of acquisition of words used in the test, which is constructed on the evidence of the strong lexical-phonological links in early speech acquisition.

Presenter Information

Carol Stoel-Gammon, PhD, is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her research interests and publications focus on early speech and language development in young children with typical development and those with speech-language disorders.

A. Lynn Williams, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the College of Clinical & Rehabilitative Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University. She provides oversight and curriculum development for a number of allied health professions within her college. Her scholarly interests include assessment and intervention models in evidence-based management of speech sound disorders in children. Lynn is an ASHA Fellow and was the 2021 ASHA President.
