ASHA Learning Pass

Principles of motor learning (PML) are guidelines developed for the purpose of training motor execution of movement. Initially designed for training in the limbs, the methods have been adapted for use with the oral motor system. This course reviews how PML can be employed in training protocols targeting speech production.

Presenter Information

Julie A.G. Stierwalt, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a Consultant in the Division of Speech Pathology, Department of Neurology, and Associate Professor in Mayo Clinic College of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In this capacity she provides diagnostic and treatment services for individuals presenting with a wide range of speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing impairments. Prior to her work at Mayo, she was in academia for 19 years, where she taught courses in dysphagia, motor speech disorders, acquired communication disorders, structural-based communication disorders, and medical speech pathology. Stierwalt received her BA and MA degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and her PhD from the University of Iowa. She has written numerous articles, chapters, a co-authored textbook (Brain-Based Communication Disorders), and Aphasia and Related Neurogenic Language Disorders (5th ed., co-edited with Leonard LaPointe). Recently, the latter text has been translated and published in Mandarin Chinese and Greek. In 2009, ASHA recognized Stierwalt’s contributions to the field with ASHA Fellow status.
