Reversing the COVID-19 Slide: Narrative Intervention for Recovery From Academic & Social Emotional Learning Loss (PD102649)
All children need the ability to express themselves in difficult social situations. The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have resulted in what is termed the “COVID-19 Slide.” This slide is representational of academic skills and social abilities lost, in spite of valiant efforts by teachers, specialists, parents, and all caregivers. The focus on technology, and in turn, the lessening of in-person interactions, calls for attention to social-emotional learning (SEL) as well as academics. The presenters share a method using the metacognitive approach, Story Grammar Marker®, with selections of children’s literature including “Listening With My Heart” by Gabi Garcia and others that target all five SEL competencies—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making—through a narrative development lens.
This course is a recorded session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 2177V).
Content Disclosure: This session focuses on the Story Grammar Marker approach.
