Supporting the Social and Emotional Well-Being of Families in the Context of Auditory Rehabilitation (PD102672)

Course Description

This course examines the social and emotional needs of families and how professionals can effectively support clients and their families across the life span for greater well-being. Building on prior experience, knowledge, and skill within the area of auditory rehabilitation, the session focuses on clinical tools and techniques in areas including screening for depression and anxiety, techniques for parental involvement, and counseling skills in motivational interviewing. The speaker discusses findings from current literature (including research from the speaker and colleagues) as well as future research directions.

This course is a recorded master class session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session MC55V). The session was developed by, and presenters invited by, SIG 7: Auditory Rehabilitation.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Explain social and emotional development in children with hearing loss 
  • Describe symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other common behavioral health concerns 
  • List screeners to identify those at risk for social, emotional, or behavioral concerns 
  • Identify strategies that can be used to promote social and emotional well-being 
  • Discuss ways to promote family-centered care and increase parental involvement

Presenter Information

Ivette Cejas, PhD(Presenting Author), is an Associate Professor and Director of Family Support Services at the University of Miami Department of Otolaryngology. She is a licensed psychologist in the state of Florida and serves on the AG Bell Board of Directors. Her research evaluates the effects of hearing loss on cognitive, social, and emotional development.
