Treatment Guidelines for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (PD102559)

Presenter(s): Cari D Ebert, MS, CCC-SLP
Course Description

For new and seasoned clinicians alike, treating children with apraxia of speech can be a challenge; traditional articulation and phonological approaches are ineffective in treating childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) because they do not address the core impairment—motor planning and programming. This session provides a framework for establishing an appropriate CAS treatment plan based on the principles of motor learning. The speaker shares evidence-based, clinically relevant intervention strategies that you can begin implementing immediately.

This course is a recorded session from the 2022 ASHA Schools Connect online conference.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Explain how speech intervention for children with apraxia of speech differs from approaches for other speech sound disorders
  • Summarize the principles of motor learning and how they guide speech intervention for children with motor speech disorders
