Hearing Loss in Children: ADHD, Physical Activity, and Medical Education (S09102906)
The three articles in this SIG 9 activity focus on parent-reported ADHD behaviors, fatigue, and language in children who are deaf and hard of hearing; physical activity in children with hearing loss; and massive open online courses for critical medical education related to children with hearing loss. First, Mattingly et al.’s study centers on finding out if children with hearing loss and substantially delayed language appear to be at risk for overreporting of inattentive and hyperactive behaviors and if attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) measures are influenced by the presence of language-based items, by child language skills, and by child and parent report of fatigue. Next, Nedrud and Schafer follow the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to examine physical activity in children with hearing loss. Research questions aim to compare physical activity levels and participation in organized sports in children with hearing loss relative to peers with no hearing loss. A second aim is to examine the impact of the degree of hearing loss and identify modifiable barriers to physical activity. Finally, Raven et al. discuss the lack of a formal online training course on pediatric hearing loss. This group of authors developed a novel, freely accessible course for worldwide professionals.
