Emerging Tools and Methodologies in Teleaudiology (PD102238)

Course Description

Description:

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic required clinicians to rapidly adapt their practice for remote service provision, researchers were already exploring effective telehealth approaches for audiology. The articles in this journal self-study (selected from a special issue of the American Journal of Audiology, “4th International Meeting on Internet and Audiology”) examine teleaudiology tools and methodologies for hearing screenings, home-based auditory assessment for people who use cochlear implants, assessing hearing aid outcomes using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), and a tool for evaluating hearing aid performance.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Describe results of an automated speech-in-noise test for listeners of different age and native language groups
  • Discuss the benefits and limitations of the BASE home-based auditory assessment
  • Discuss the implications for different applications of ecological momentary assessment (EMA)
  • Explain how a sentence-based experience logging tool captures the auditory and nonauditory factors that contribute to hearing difficulties for people who use hearing aids

Contents

The following articles are included in this course:

  • An Automated Speech-in-Noise Test for Remote Testing: Development and Preliminary Evaluation, by Alessia Paglialonga, Edoardo Maria Polo, Marco Zanet, Giulia Rocco, Toon van Waterschoot, and Riccardo Barbieri

Course Reviews

"Due to the pandemic, teleaudiology has become a staple to every Audiologist. I found these studies to be very informative regarding new options to share with patients as well as further insight into current or past tools. With the advances in technology, we have ways to evaluate how a person hears with their hearing aids or cochlear implants outside the office in real world examples. The more information a provider can gather from the patient, whether subjective or objective, the better outcomes we can provide."

Assessment Type

Self-assessment—Think about what you learned and report on the Completion Form how you will use your new knowledge.
