Summary: This session describes a research investigation of speech recognition in quiet and noise in thousands of patients with varying degrees of hearing loss. Based on the data, the speaker provides clinical recommendations in which speech recognition in noise can become the default test of speech perception in routine audiologic assessment, and word recognition in quiet is only performed when it is likely to be suboptimal.

Summary: In this session, the authors briefly review the literature on the developmental risks and auditory effects of pediatric unilateral hearing loss. Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.

Summary: This journal self-study course addresses the effectiveness of various aphasia treatments, a topic that many researchers explored at the 51st Clinical Aphasiology Conference (CAC) in North Carolina. Published in a special issue of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, these articles examine specific interventions for particular patient populations, including individuals with stroke-induced aphasia, those with acquired apraxia of speech, those with anomia, and those with Alzheimer's dementia.

Summary: Far too often, current learning priorities keep children and young adults focused on daily work, grades, and performance, creating a disconnect between habit mastery and the long-term needs of their future self. This session presents effective and evidence-based strategies to improve children's abilities to envision and execute goal-directed and future-focused actions. The presenter discusses strategies to strengthen future-oriented reasoning and emotional regulation during gratification postponement so students can effectively predict performance challenges, anticipate glitches, and handle mistakes while keeping in mind their future needs.

Summary: This on demand webinar will discuss evaluating children with voice disorders, including determining the appropriate clinical path to a comprehensive voice evaluation. The speaker will present strategies and techniques for collecting and evaluating voice samples; highlight no-tech and low-tech assessment methods; and discuss the importance of identifying children with dysphonic voices from an educational and social-emotional perspective. Summary: This session introduces a language intervention program for middle and high school students-Philosophy for Adolescents-that is designed to support critical thinking, narrative and expository discourse, and the use of complex syntax and literate vocabulary such as abstract nouns and metacognitive verbs. The speaker discusses and demonstrates intervention using Philosophy for Adolescents through role-playing activities that engage participants as they work through a lesson in pairs or small groups.
