Summary: This course explores how health disparities and systems of oppression are affecting clinical settings and clinical outcomes for communication and swallowing services delivered to individuals of advanced age. Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: This session is designed for SLPs from any work setting who are considering serving, or have been asked to serve, as an expert witness. The speakers introduce the role of an expert witness, in contrast to the role of a fact witness, and review the qualifications and distinctive roles and responsibilities of an expert witness, with a focus on relevant laws (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, IDEA, and ADA). Summary: The experience of trauma or re-traumatization during a person's rehab stay can result in physical, psychological, and emotional health conditions, and can also impede therapeutic rapport, the patient's feelings of safety, and the overall healing and recovery process.
