Summary: Teachers and administrators increasingly turn to school-based SLPs for intervention for executive functioning (EF) deficits. This session is directed toward clinicians working in schools (especially high schools) who have acquired the basic background knowledge (e.g., what is EF, what are the particular domains of EF, etc.) and need to learn how to plan and implement specific EF interventions.

Summary: This course describes the various ways that a head and neck cancer diagnosis can impact mental health, and ways to identify when a patient may need to seek professional help from a mental health specialist. The speaker highlights how a speech-language pathologist can assist in the detection of a potential mental health disorder through use of mental health screenings and head-and-neck-specific quality-of-life measures, and discusses considerations for addressing mental health and effectively navigating challenges that may impede success during treatment and/or rehabilitation.

Summary: Comprehensive management and treatment for children with CAPDs necessitates effective evaluation of co-morbidities and other related factors. Summary: This session—a recorded session from ASHA’s 2020 Schools Connect conference—demonstrates how to use a language-levels model (i.e., sound, word, sentence, discourse) to explain relationships across oral and written language modalities and to advocate for the role SLPs play in literacy intervention. Summary: Aging produces predictable and specific changes to the human respiratory and digestive systems and predisposes older people to more severe effects of—and more protracted limitations secondary to—diseases and surgical procedures. This session provides much-needed, clinically translatable information about aging-related respiratory and digestive system changes and how they affect swallowing diagnosis and treatment. The session also reviews the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (sepsis) as a model of an atypical dysphagia-producing illness.
