Summary: Cochlear implant technology has evolved over time to include sophisticated features such as accessory-based and direct streaming, remote control devices and apps, bimodal compatibility, and more – and hearing health providers must become proficient with it all. This session explores working with and efficiently troubleshooting these modern and increasingly common systems, such as remote microphones, DM/FM systems, and mobile devices to improve patient outcomes and increase clinic efficiency. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”

Summary: Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 stating that people with disabilities should have access to their communities, a critical component has often been overlooked—training emergency first responders to communicate with people who have complex communication needs. In this session, two SLPs demonstrate how they have trained nearly 2,000 emergency first responders.

Summary: This course features moderated discussions among a panel of clinicians who collectively provide cochlear implant auditory rehabilitation (AR) to patients of all ages. Topics and discussions demonstrate the need to expand and differentiate intervention approaches based on the unique needs of individual patients with cochlear implants. Panelists review recent studies, present translational applications, share case studies and examples, illustrate multidisciplinary professional roles, and discuss evidence-based assessment and treatment. This course – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 7: Aural Rehabilitation and Its Instrumentation.

Summary: In the era of COVID-19, clinicians in health care settings have faced challenges in the evaluation and treatment of a new patient population - those who have had COVID-19 - requiring us to reframe our current treatment techniques. This session focuses on reinventing the speech-language pathologist's approach to treatment of respiratory activity tolerance for motor speech. It addresses collaboration with physical and occupational therapists for incorporation of dual motor tasks with more traditional treatment. Speakers discuss goal writing and tips for tracking measurable outcomes.

Summary: This session explores what is currently known about the downstream effects of hearing loss in older adults and discusses ways to proactively optimize communication outcomes for older adults using cochlear implants. The presenters address cochlear implant candidacy in this growing population, counselling for patients and their families/caregivers, and service delivery modification ideas.

Summary: No national or international consensus exists on the delivery of care specific to pre-operative and post-operative audiologic cochlear implant evaluation and management. As such, decision-making regarding testing methods is largely made by the professional judgement of the clinician, which can bring with it discrepancies in testing that lead to inconsistent access to cochlear implants. This session discusses these discrepancies and provides a set of guidelines clinicians can use to refer patients for a cochlear implant evaluation. The session addresses the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when evaluating candidates for cochlear implants. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”

Summary: There is not much consensus or standardization in the practices professionals use to measure outcomes for cochlear implant (CI) recipients. This session examines outcome measurement, providing clear and concise recommendations for assessment of outcomes in adult and pediatric CI recipients. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
