Summary: A thorough cranial nerve examination is an essential part of the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation of every patient. When performed, it is useful in the diagnosis of speech and swallowing disorders, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for development of a targeted, individualized treatment plan. This video course provides an overview of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the cranial nerve examination. Participants will receive detailed instructions for testing and interpreting findings of the cranial nerve examination. The course also describes common abnormalities observed for patients with impairment of cranial nerve function.

Summary: SLPs who work in schools – particularly those who are less experienced with telepractice – may be concerned about the effects on their students’ outcomes and their own job security if telepractice became commonplace in their district. This course – a recorded session from ASHA’s 2019 Schools Connect conference – explores how services delivered via telepractice and on-site can work in tandem to improve student outcomes and clinician caseloads.
Presenter(s): Rhea Paul, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Toddlers with a range of communication disorders can be minimally verbal past the age at which children typically begin speaking. This session describes an integrated approach using AAC and interventions that target vocalizations to increase expressive language and speech production in young children who are minimally verbal or nonverbal. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Birth to Three: Working Together to Serve Children and Their Families.” It appeared in the conference with the title Working With Preverbal Infants and Toddlers Toward Early Speech.

Summary: Persisting /r/ distortions are common speech sound errors for many children and adolescents. This on demand webinar describes /r/ intervention approaches that are rooted in sound science about the phonetics of /r/, basic principles of speech motor control, and evidence-based solutions.

Summary: A 2019 Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools forum, Vocabulary Across the School Grades, presented evidence that strong vocabulary is important for students’ literacy and overall academic success across grade levels. The articles in this journal self-study course describe effective instructional strategies for facilitating vocabulary growth and improving reading comprehension in middle and high school students. The authors present recommendations and implications for practice.

Summary: Accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) can be challenging for seasoned and newer clinicians alike. How do we efficiently and effectively assemble and grow our CAS “toolkit”? This webinar will discuss practical tips – rooted in the principles of evidence-based practice – to strengthen SLPs’ diagnosis and treatment of CAS to enhance child outcomes.
Presenter(s): Donna Murray, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: This on demand webinar identifies and discusses specific early pre-verbal, verbal, and social features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and common co-occurring factors. The speaker explains the importance of differential diagnosis of ASD – including the role of the SLP in the process – and discusses ASD-specific assessments and best practice evaluation methods.
Presenter(s): Kelly Farquharson, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Do you wonder why you have children on your caseload who have had the same speech sound production errors for years? Do you wonder what you can do to help the 5th grader who continues to have trouble with the /r/ sound? Do you wonder what happens to these children after they are off your caseload? This webinar will discuss these and other questions that the presenter herself had as a practicing school-based SLP and that she now attempts to solve as a researcher. In this webinar, she will explore the factors that influence language, literacy, and cognitive skills for children with early, persistent, and remediated speech sound disorders. Discussion will include how SLPs can help these children more quickly as well as assessment considerations for ensuring the best outcomes from intervention.
Presenter(s): Deborah Moncrieff, PhD, CCC-A; Andrew J. Vermiglio, AuD, CCC-A

Summary: There is not one single, authoritative construct or definition for central auditory processing disorders (CAPDs), which often results in patients receiving a general diagnosis that is not deficit-specific and management strategies that are not individualized and therefore produce less impactful outcomes. This session will describe an alternative approach to characterizing CAPDs – that is, identifying specific clinical entities within the broad construct of CAPDs that professionals can unambiguously diagnose and for which deficit-specific interventions can lead to improved outcomes in auditory processing. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”
Presenter(s): Melanie W. Hudson, MA, CCC-SLP

Summary: It’s not a matter of "if" but rather "when" the school-based SLP assumes the role of a supervisor. This course explains the key elements of the supervisory process and defines the roles and responsibilities of both the supervisor and the supervisee in the school setting. The speaker discusses relationship development, communication, and the role and influence of supervisory style on supervisee performance and decision-making.
