Summary: Toddlers with a range of communication disorders can be minimally verbal past the age at which children typically begin speaking. This session describes an integrated approach using AAC and interventions that target vocalizations to increase expressive language and speech production in young children who are minimally verbal or nonverbal. Summary: The need for community-viable, evidence-based intervention strategies for toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a national priority as earlier diagnosis becomes more common. This webinar will present strategies for taking evidence-based research and applying it to practice. Using video examples, the presenters will discuss the findings from the randomized controlled trial of the Early Social Interaction Project (ESI), which teaches parents how to embed evidence-based intervention strategies and supports in everyday activities in natural environments to promote their child’s active engagement. The webinar will also illustrate strategies for utilizing the Autism Navigator, a collection of web-based courses and tools using extensive video footage, for parents, professionals, and others with the goal of improving outcomes for young children with ASD.

Summary: This is the first in a two-part course is designed to bring you comprehensive information on cleft palate assessment and treatment. From glottal stops to learned nasal emission, this course will help you hone your knowledge and clinical practice skills in assessing speech disorders associated with cleft palate/VPI. The speaker will discuss procedures and techniques, and share audio and video clips to demonstrate how to assess the variety and uniqueness of speech deviations seen in cleft palate cases. Summary: To support infants in the NICU setting and maximize oral feeding outcomes for these babies, SLPs need to consider the maturational status of premature infants, medical conditions of ill newborns, and positive and negative experiences in the NICU. This webinar will address the maturation of the oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases of swallowing, which directly affect safety and efficiency, as well as medical conditions that increase an infant’s risk of feeding disorders. We will explore evidence-based interventions designed to improve feeding experiences, taking into account maturational and medical status, and discuss the concept of homeostasis and its importance in the NICU.

Summary: Professional fatigue and self-care are critical issues for audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Without attention and intervention, professional fatigue can negatively impact a professional’s home life, relationships, personal well-being, work life, and/or ability to deliver person-centered care. This course explores the concepts of empathy, emotional contagion, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, and burnout as they relate to the professions and offers tips to avoid and address these challenges.

Summary: Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it's not more work, it is the work. This course discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and SLP services and provides practical ideas for doing so.
