Summary: Young adults with mild-to-moderate language impairments and low emotional intelligence often struggle to perform independently in mainstream adult settings. This session from ASHA's 2021 Schools Connect online conference discusses language and emotional intelligence skills that help post-secondary students achieve better quality-of-life outcomes. The speaker discusses strategies, activities, and resources that SLPs and their secondary students can use to improve outcomes. Summary: This course explores an effective technique for building complex narrative language and thought. By "pressing pause," SLPs and students can take time to talk about and connect "thoughts" (mental states) to elements of story grammar such as initiating events, feelings, and plans. This process is integral for discovering intentions and motivations, perspective-taking, thinking critically, solving problems, and participating in social situations. Speakers also discuss a powerful way to teach "inference" using film "jump cuts."

The speaker will highlight theoretical frameworks and current research that speak to the acquisition and improvement of cognitive, linguistic, and motor skills that are required for writing. Summary: This session explores a situation that many school-based SLPs find themselves in: Serving students whose languages and cultures differ from their own. The presenter uses case studies to review the role of monolingual SLPs in evaluating culturally and linguistically diverse students and explores evaluation protocols to help distinguish between communication difference and disorder. This course is a recorded session from the 2022/2023 online conference "Assessment, Eligibility, and Dismissal in Schools: Strategies, Tools, and Decision-Making."

Summary: Teachers and administrators increasingly turn to school-based SLPs for intervention for executive functioning (EF) deficits. This session is directed toward clinicians working in schools (especially high schools) who have acquired the basic background knowledge (e.g., what is EF, what are the particular domains of EF, etc.) and need to learn how to plan and implement specific EF interventions.

Summary: Audiologists and SLPs are critical team members who can support listening and spoken language outcomes for students who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH). This webinar discusses auditory-verbal intervention as an approach for learners who are DHH and learning to listen and/or talk. The presenters explore foundational elements critical for success in auditory-verbal intervention, including audiologic assessment and management, caregiver engagement, and support from interprofessional teams.

Summary: SLPs have noted the diagnostic challenge of distinguishing between the clinical indicators of language disorder, language delay based on the impacts of being reared in poverty, and the linguistic variation of students who speak African American English (AAE). This session discusses evidence-based assessment and treatment practices that SLPs can utilize when working with speakers of AAE and other nonmainstream dialects to help them identify students with true language and literacy disorders and provide needed interventions in a timely manner.
