Summary: SLPs who work with individuals with development disabilities across the life span are often confronted with myths that may limit the communication of their clients, students, and patients. This on demand webinar examines some of these myths and how they affect the delivery of communication services and supports. Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.

Summary: This on demand webinar is designed for school-based SLPs who support children with complex oral feeding and swallowing needs. The speaker discusses the components of a robust feeding and dysphagia assessment, and how that assessment informs treatment decisions surrounding a student's feeding needs. The course examines effective and realistic goal development to address feeding needs within the IEP.

Specific topics include: assessing article production accuracy in an Arabic-English speaking child as well as examination of the utility of the Vietnamese language version of the Modified Checklist of Autism in Toddlers-Revision with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F) for screening Vietnamese children for autism risk.

The course will explain the impacts of social determinants of health as they relate to the diagnosis of and intervention for children with ASD and hearing loss.
