Summary: This presentation describes the evidence and future directions for research, practice, and policy to address factors that contribute to disparities in care between minority and non-minority patients. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that persons living with all types of communication disabilities experience disparities in the receipt of high-quality health care services.

Summary: Recent studies from the presenters’ laboratory demonstrate a relationship between electrode-to-modiolus distance and channel independence. Specifically, children and adults who use cochlear implants (CIs) (precurved electrodes) demonstrate performance gains up to 12 and 16 channels. The presenters’ working theory is that greater channel independence affords better spectrotemporal resolution. This presentation describes the relationship between spectrotemporal processing and CI outcomes for adult and pediatric CI users. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. Summary: This course is composed of a journal article that discusses person-centered assessment methods and tools for primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Using case studies, the authors define and present components of person-centered assessment, outline the R.A.I.S.E. assessment framework, and discuss its practical applications for assessment and treatment of individuals with PPA as well as for working with their care partners.

Summary: This session discusses a project that established a cross-sector national consortium of self-advocates with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), family advocates, community providers, and health care professionals. The consortium guides and evaluates an environmental scan and literature review on best practices in educating health care professional students in the care of persons with IDD, including health care professional students addressing communication disorders.
