Summary: An information-rich videofluoroscopic assessment can help clinicians determine which components of the complex oropharyngeal swallow need to be targeted for intervention. Visualizing all of the elements that contribute to a well-integrated or disordered swallow mechanism requires an ordered and disciplined review. This video course demonstrates methods to enhance clinicians' ability to perform a videofluoroscopic assessment and discern the discrete elements of the oropharyngeal swallow. Participants can practice determining the integrity or disorder of the swallow mechanism by viewing and interpreting case study video.

Summary: This video course introduces the components of the normal adult swallow across all phases. The course is designed to give clinicians the confidence to discuss normal anatomy and physiology of all phases of adult swallowing with patients, caregivers, and medical professionals, and to use their knowledge to accurately assess swallow function.

Summary: Endotracheal tubes, tracheostomy tubes, and ventilator dependency can have adverse effects on communication and swallowing. SLPs who take the lead role in remediating these impairments need to have the knowledge and skills to provide appropriate, safe, and evidence-based interventions. This streaming video course is designed for the SLP who has an interest in post-extubation dysphagia and in communication and swallowing challenges associated with tracheostomy tubes and ventilator dependency. The course reviews the literature and presents a “how-to” guide for managing these medically complex patients. Medical SLPs will walk away with strategies to best manage their patients who are experiencing complications due to artificial airways.

Summary: This on demand webinar explores how the history of African American Language (AAL) relates to culturally sensitive and responsive practices in communication disorders. The webinar features first-time screenings of several excerpts from “The History of African American Language.” During the webinar, sociolinguist Walt Wolfram and African American Language scholar and SLP Orlando Taylor discuss the impacts of the history of African American Language on clinical practices for professionals working with individuals who speak AAL.

Summary: This webinar will walk SLPs through the procedures used in flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES; also known as fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) to evaluate patients with dysphagia. Summary: Literacy skills begin to develop in early childhood, and addressing deficits in reading and writing skills early may prevent later problems in school. This journal self-study explores special situations that may affect literacy skills, including the presence of speech sound disorders, hearing impairment, and cultural and/or socioeconomic differences. It also includes articles that discuss intervention techniques to improve phonological awareness, an important emergent literacy skill. Clinicians can use this information to improve reading and writing assessment and treatment techniques for preschool and early elementary school children.

Summary: This journal self-study course explores best practices for dysphasia assessment and recent innovations in dysphagia treatment. The articles – from an American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology special issue “Select Papers From the 2018 Charleston Swallowing Conference at Northwestern University” – will help SLPs develop a deeper understanding of how to select appropriate treatment techniques, as well as why those techniques can be impactful in improving swallowing function. The articles delve deeply into past, current, and future treatment approaches for dysphagia and will be helpful for established clinicians as well as those who are new to the field of dysphagia assessment and treatment.
