Summary: Childhood and adolescent voice disorders are observed in multiple clinical settings, with many professionals having limited background or education to properly treat them. Pediatric voice disorders can have adverse effects on children and teens in classroom and social situations. This video course provides a plethora of practical information based on research and practice in a major pediatric hospital setting. Vocal hygiene, vocal function exercises, semi-occluded vocal tract exercises, and other specific techniques are discussed.

Summary: A thorough cranial nerve examination is an essential part of the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation of every patient. When performed, it is useful in the diagnosis of speech and swallowing disorders, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for development of a targeted, individualized treatment plan. This video course provides an overview of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the cranial nerve examination. Participants will receive detailed instructions for testing and interpreting findings of the cranial nerve examination. The course also describes common abnormalities observed for patients with impairment of cranial nerve function.

Summary: Since 2004, Response to Intervention (RTI) has been implemented in varying degrees across the United States. Recently, RTI has shifted to Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), which are more encompassing systems for supporting all learners. Summary: An information-rich videofluoroscopic assessment can help clinicians determine which components of the complex oropharyngeal swallow need to be targeted for intervention. Visualizing all of the elements that contribute to a well-integrated or disordered swallow mechanism requires an ordered and disciplined review. This video course demonstrates methods to enhance clinicians' ability to perform a videofluoroscopic assessment and discern the discrete elements of the oropharyngeal swallow. Participants can practice determining the integrity or disorder of the swallow mechanism by viewing and interpreting case study video.

Summary: Curriculum-based language assessment and intervention is one way for SLPs to create a comprehensive picture of a student’s oral and written language needs and pinpoint areas to target in intervention. This webinar focuses on how to use information from curriculum-based language assessment to provide curriculum-based language intervention in classroom or pull-out settings. The course discusses techniques such as using actual curricular materials to target students’ individualized goals while meeting core curriculum standards in classroom-based writing labs and small group contexts. The course also offers case studies of students across grade levels (and encourages participants to reflect on their own examples) to illustrate techniques for addressing problems of word structure knowledge, vocabulary, sentence structure, and discourse formulation and comprehension across all modalities. Discussion includes how to decide when pull-out approaches might be necessary to supplement intervention in classroom-based contexts.

In this webinar, the speaker will discuss how to perform curriculum-based language assessment, beginning with the selection of areas of the curriculum to work on. Participants will explore how to use dynamic assessment to identify a student’s particular strengths and weaknesses and answer four questions based on selected curricular tasks: (1) What does the task require? (2) What does the student currently do when attempting the task? (3) What does the student need to do differently to be more successful at the task? (4) What, if any, modifications to the task are needed to support the student’s success? The course will demonstrate how to integrate formal and informal assessment data to understand students’ individualized needs and plan intervention that can improve language/literacy skills and foster better academic outcomes.

Summary: Implementing effective approaches to enhance social communication with peers in natural environments is critical to improving core deficits in communication, joint engagement, and play skills. This webinar will discuss how SLPs can provide peer-mediated interventions (PMIs) for the students on their caseloads. The course will highlight the key components of setting up the environment, recruiting and training peers, teaching a range of communication skills, and measuring child-peer social progress. The webinar will describe approaches for increasing intentional communication of nonverbal preschool children using AAC as well as basic communication and conversation skills for school-age students, with an emphasis on matching the intervention context and strategies to specific student skills and needs.

Summary: Two deficits commonly caused by damage to the right hemisphere are unilateral neglect and anosognosia. Unilateral neglect is reduced attention to one region of space, and anosognosia is reduced awareness of deficits. These deficits commonly co-occur and have an impact on how well a patient participates in and responds to treatment. This webinar will discuss characteristics, assessment, and treatment of both disorders.
