Summary: In this audio recording, psychologist Via Strong and SLP Rebecca Politis explore the challenges and accomplishments they had working together to treat conversion disorder in a rehab setting. They discuss how to use a collaborative approach to diagnosis, tips on communicating with school professionals to facilitate a student’s return to school, and what it takes to provide empathetic care to patients with this often-misunderstood disorder. Summary: This journal self-study updates clinicians on advances in the field that can refine current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Two articles address assessment: One examines how type of stimuli can affect differential diagnosis of CAS, and the other identifies possible red flags in young children by examining characteristics of speech production in infants and toddlers who were later diagnosed with CAS. Two additional articles address advances in intervention for CAS: One looks at the efficacy of adding prosody as a treatment component, and the other explores a model-based treatment protocol.

Summary: This video course will focus on using evidence-based exercise practices in swallowing rehabilitation. The speaker will discuss the theoretical background and evidence for exercise science and then present exercise-based techniques that SLPs can implement with patients. Specific topics will include motor learning, skill vs. strength training, and muscle structure and function. Specific exercises will be discussed, including isometric lingual strength training, expiratory muscle strength training, chin tuck against resistance, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment, and more.

Summary: This journal self-study course compares language performance in children with and without cochlear implants from preschool to 6th grade. The articles examine levels of language from phonology to prosody, offering insights into areas of strength and weakness as well as clinical directions. The first article examines consonant acquisition patterns based on hearing exposure. The second and third articles compare morphosyntactic, lexical, and phonological awareness profiles, the effect of literacy on each language skill, and types of errors produced in school-age children with and without cochlear implants. The fourth article explores differences in word-learning strategies that could affect lexical development and offers clinical suggestions based on these findings. The final article explores children’s abilities to discriminate emotional intent based on suprasegmental characteristics in the speech signal.

Summary: This journal self-study includes select papers that were presented at the 2017 Clinical Aphasiology Conference in Snowbird, Utah. Summary: This course presents a practical framework for cognitive rehabilitation for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Clinicians can use the framework to identify functional treatments that are evidence-based, matched to individualized patient needs, and feasible given the time and resource constraints of the current health care environment. The course explores specific cognitive rehabilitation interventions that patients with a brain injury may find particularly valuable and motivating. The presenters use case studies to discuss how to write functional goals and identify optimum outcome measures.

Summary: With all the developments and changes in aphasia therapy, clinicians can have difficulty keeping abreast of the latest and greatest tools and techniques to ensure they are selecting the best evidence-based treatment option to fit a particular client’s needs and language abilities. This video course uses the ASHA Practice Portal and other resources to explore case studies and apply aphasia interventions to achieve functional goals for adults of all ages. The course identifies candidacy requirements for numerous aphasia interventions, reviews the procedures for using them, and discusses how to fit them into required goal statements and outcome measures.
