Summary: This session explores how to adapt traditional speech-language practices to serve students who use AAC systems. The session demonstrates analyzing language samples from a student using an AAC system and then developing goals and intervention activities to address development in the areas of pragmatics, phonology, vocabulary, and grammar. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 online conference “Expanding AAC: Accessible Strategies for Functional Communication.”
Presenter(s): Cynthia J. Cress, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Learning to gesture or use aided AAC for intentional communication with a partner is challenging for some infants and toddlers with complex communication needs. This session explores a variety of intervention strategies that improve pre-intentional and intentional communication skills using various AAC modalities and some of which incorporate families and caregivers. The speaker shares live illustrations and video examples of young children who have various difficulties with pre-intentional communication and problem solves about how intervention can structure the learner’s experiences to fill in gaps. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 online conference “Expanding AAC: Accessible Strategies for Functional Communication.”
Presenter(s): Caroline R. Musselwhite, EdD, CCC-SLP; Krista Howard, AA

Summary: This session explores tools, strategies, and a framework to enhance engagement, learning, and generalization for students who use AAC. The speakers discuss various ways to support students’ learning and communication with peers, including using social communication games, combining core vocabulary and literacy, and determining authentic purposes. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 online conference “Expanding AAC: Accessible Strategies for Functional Communication.”
Presenter(s): Lauren S. Enders, MA, CCC-SLP

Summary: This session explores the process of selecting and crafting measurable goals that are appropriate for students learning to communicate using AAC. The speaker reviews the AAC competency categories, shares tools that SLPs can use to identify developmentally appropriate learning targets, and discusses strategies for writing observable and measurable goals. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 online conference “Expanding AAC: Accessible Strategies for Functional Communication.”

Summary: This session examine the often-daunting process of moving a child who is minimally verbal or nonverbal from a basic to a full-featured AAC system. The session covers the selection, use, and goal-setting process for a basic, functional communication and language development system while planning for assessment for and implementation of a fuller system. The speaker shares suggestions for designing effective intervention sessions and ideas for helping the team get on board. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 online conference “Expanding AAC: Accessible Strategies for Functional Communication.”

Summary: Studies have shown that grammar is foundational to a child’s communication and academic growth. SLPs who work with children with development language disorders (DLD) – regardless of the etiology of the disorder – need effective research-based grammar interventions in their toolbox. The articles in this journal self-study (selected from a Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools forum, “Morphosyntax Assessment and Intervention for Children”) describe evidence-based approaches for grammar assessment and treatment and provide tools to support goal-setting and progress monitoring. The articles discuss new approaches and practical implications for practice.
Presenter(s): Tami Altschuler MA, CCC-SLP

Summary: Regardless of their age, patients in critical and acute care settings may experience communication difficulties due to the nature of their illness and the medical interventions they require. This session discusses augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for these patients, including evaluation and intervention considerations, resources, and materials to support AAC service delivery.

Summary: SLPs are working with an increasing number of children and families who identify as bilingual, multilingual, or dual language learners (DLLs). This journal self-study explores how family expectations can impact the effectiveness of interventions, how expectations may vary across cultures, and what SLP interventions are considered evidence-based when working with DLLs and culturally and linguistically diverse families.
Credit(s): PDHs: 8.5, ASHA CEUs*: 0.85
Summary: SLPs are tasked with evaluating dual language learners (DLLs), often without speaking the language the child uses most. This journal self-study explores emerging practices that SLPs can use to improve overall assessment quality and outcomes when working with diverse DLLs.
Presenter(s): Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan, EdD, CALT, CCC-SLP

Summary: Speech and language skills are essential for literacy development. Structured Literacy is a comprehensive approach to literacy that is based upon language skills. This session explores the components of the Structured Literacy approach and discusses how SLPs can enhance students’ success not only in language but also in literacy using this approach. The speaker demonstrates model lessons and shares a framework for intervention. This course is a recorded session from the 2020/2021 online conference “Practical Solutions for Elementary Assessment, Treatment, and Collaboration.”
