Summary: Cochlear implantation is now the standard treatment for moderately severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in adults. But the unique needs of older adults and the challenges of service delivery for this group are often overlooked. This session will explore what is currently known about the downstream effects of hearing loss in older adults and discuss ways to proactively optimize communication outcomes for older adults using cochlear implants. The presenters will address cochlear implant candidacy in this growing population, counselling for patients and their families/caregivers, and service delivery modification ideas.

Summary: This presentation addresses the underlying neuropathology of ataxia, dysarthria-specific assessment and treatment for degenerative ataxias, and the importance of cognitive assessment and treatment. The presenter highlights recent advances in intervention, including noninvasive brain stimulation.
Presenter(s): Shriya Basu, PhD, CCC-SLP; Lei Sun, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: This session shares findings of an exploratory survey study exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communication, mental health, and quality of life (QoL) in people who stutter. The course discusses how the pandemic affects people with communication disorders, then shifts to discussing mental health, communication, and QoL in people who stutter and how the COVID-19 pandemic amplifies existing challenges.

Summary: This session shares findings from a tertiary care hospital at the center of the COVID-19 pandemic response in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and provides an opportunity to compare and contrast findings with global patterns and local experiences. This investigation summarizes the clinical conditions, management, and functional outcomes of adults admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 and dysphagia, and offers insights into risk factors and clinical predictions of favorable swallowing outcomes.

Summary: Older adults must make important decisions about their end-of-life care, including power of attorney assignment and advance directives, and those with hearing and other communication disorders need special accommodations to participate in these important decisions to the fullest extent possible. This session discusses the communication needs of patients in the final stages of life, including the use of various hearing technologies, such as hearing aids, personal sound amplifiers, and pocket talkers. The presenters discuss tools to facilitate conversations among patients, family members, and caregivers.

Summary: Many times, patients are taking medications recommended and prescribed from multiple practitioners and sources, and no one provider is responsible for the overall picture, possibly leading to medication-related harm. Thus, it is incumbent upon each member of the patient's health care team to play a role in ensuring a safer medication use experience based on basic principles regarding polypharmacy. This session will use case studies to explore polypharmacy and synergistic effects to help audiologists contribute to positive overall medication results for their patients.

Summary: The field of audiology focuses mostly on the peripheral auditory system-in both diagnosis and management-but other factors (e.g., "hidden hearing loss" and/or reduced cognitive ability) may play a role in an individual's ability to communicate in diverse environments. This session discusses how audiologists can incorporate evoked potential testing into the assessment battery to obtain a more comprehensive picture of auditory function.
Presenter(s): Victoria A Sanchez, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, F-AAA; Ann Clock Eddins, PhD, MBA, CCC-A, FAAA

Summary: Emerging treatment approaches for age-related hearing loss include alternative interventions aimed at ameliorating symptoms and slowing down or even preventing hearing loss, in contrast with current treatment approaches, which focus primarily on amplification and communication strategies. This session will explore up-and-coming approaches, such as pre-clinical investigation of hormones (e.g., Aldosterone) correlated with auditory function; medicinal-related interventions; and challenges to timelines to bring new treatments to market.

Summary: Teleaudiology is demonstrating potential to make hearing care more accessible and affordable. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted digital solutions for remote care not as a convenience but as an essential tool for safe health access. This course reviews basic concepts underlying teleaudiology and explores current trends and future directions in this rapidly changing space. A range of new trends in digital audiology, including novel technologies and service-delivery models, are explored with consideration of future directions.

Summary: This course describes the creation of Sing and Speak 4 Kids (SS4Kids), an innovative music-based program to support speech and language development in young children with various impairments. The presentation discusses in-program progress tracking, quantitative data graphics, focus group, and user feedback, and includes video examples of program usage. Presenters discuss clinical implementation and implications.
