Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.

Summary: This journal self-study course examines remote treatment for aphasia, a topic that several researchers explored at the 51st Clinical Aphasiology Conference (CAC) in North Carolina. Articles examine the effectiveness of telepractice delivery of three types of aphasia treatment: conversation group treatment, Combined Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech Treatment, and Sound Production Treatment. The articles compare outcomes of the treatments when administered remotely vs. in-person.

Summary: Older adults must make important decisions about their end-of-life care, and those with hearing and other communication disorders need special accommodations to participate in these important decisions to the fullest extent possible. This session discusses the communication needs of patients in the final stages of life, including the use of various hearing technologies, such as hearing aids, personal sound amplifiers, and pocket talkers. Summary: The field of audiology focuses mostly on the peripheral auditory system-in both diagnosis and management-but other factors (e.g., "hidden hearing loss" and/or reduced cognitive ability) may play a role in an individual's ability to communicate in diverse environments. Summary: Emerging treatment approaches for age-related hearing loss include alternative interventions aimed at ameliorating symptoms and slowing down or even preventing hearing loss, in contrast with current treatment approaches, which focus primarily on amplification and communication strategies. This session will explore up-and-coming approaches, such as pre-clinical investigation of hormones (e.g., Aldosterone) correlated with auditory function; medicinal-related interventions; and challenges to timelines to bring new treatments to market.
