Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.

Summary: Language assessment in children who are deaf or hard of hearing often focuses on language outcomes without a precise characterization of the child's language learning history. Speech-language pathologists and other early interventionists need support in ensuring that the child's cumulative experience with linguistic input (or lack thereof) is also captured. This session presents a practical approach for this process that follows emerging research on language access profiles. This course is a recorded technical session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 4064V).
Presenter(s): Sandie M Bass-Ringdahl, PhD, CCC-A; Aleah Suzanne Brock, MEd, CCC-SLP

Summary: This course describes a study that utilizes a multiple baseline across behaviors design to investigate the efficacy of a caregiver training intervention to increase the use of targeted facilitative language techniques (FLTs)—strategies that caregivers use to encourage language development in their children. This study utilizes telehealth to deliver a training program for caregivers of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Summary: This session provides tools for evaluating the picture books you currently use, equips you with arguments for why it is ethically important to use representative picture books and other materials, and helps you identify resources to develop a bookshelf that is aligned with your caseload composition. In addition, the presenters describe programs and strategies for implementing these selection practices into your everyday process.

Summary: Coaching can happen anywhere, with any age child, no matter the communication disorder. This session from ASHA's 2021 Schools Connect online conference explores the power of coaching caregivers. The speaker discusses how to train family members and other facilitators to use speech-language intervention strategies with their children to produce better long-term outcomes.
Presenter(s): Rhea Paul, PhD, CCC-SLP
Credit(s): PDHs: 1.5, ASHA CEUs*: 0.15
Summary: Toddlers with a range of communication disorders can be minimally verbal past the age at which children typically begin speaking. This session describes an integrated approach using AAC and interventions that target vocalizations to increase expressive language and speech production in young children who are minimally verbal or nonverbal. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Birth to Three: Working Together to Serve Children and Their Families.” It appeared in the conference with the title Working With Preverbal Infants and Toddlers Toward Early Speech.
