Summary: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) can demonstrate a range of characteristics and challenges, which can appear not only in their language abilities but also in their cognitive and motor abilities. This on demand webinar (available beginning April 18, 2024) will give SLPs a deeper understanding of the common characteristics associated with DLD as well as individual differences among children with the disorder. The webinar will share examples of how to tailor vocabulary and reading interventions for children with DLD.

Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning March 30, 2024) will guide SLPs in knowing what to listen for in the speech and resonance of children with cleft palate, cleft lip and palate, and/or velopharyngeal dysfunction and will discuss how to differentiate active, passive, and adaptive articulations. The speaker will address how to decide what to treat with speech interventions vs. what requires treatment from the medical team and will review evidence-based intervention techniques.

Summary: Many SLPs who provide early intervention (EI) services are aware of the neurodiversity paradigm and neurodiversity-affirming practices but still have questions about incorporating these practices into their services. In this on demand webinar (available beginning April 6, 2024), the presenter will review practical resources and evidence-based practices for implementing neurodiversity-affirming care in the EI setting, including practical strategies for assessment, goal writing, parent coaching, and intervention.

Summary: People with Down syndrome have extreme difficulty acquiring and maintaining speech clarity. The presence of low muscle tone, anatomical and physiological differences in oral structures, the presence of dysarthria, multiple speech and language disorders simultaneously, and a lack of intense speech practice have devastating impacts on speech production, but it doesn't have to be this way. Frequent dosage and brief delivery of services have proven successful for this population, as they have for others with motor speech disorders. However, frequent and brief services must be convenient and affordable for busy families. This session discusses teletherapy for individuals with Down syndrome, which provides convenient access to services and appeals to those who learn best visually, and clinical research consistently shows it to be as good as in-person services.
Presenter(s): Pamela Bazis, PhD, CALT, QI; Carly Dinnes, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: This course discusses strategies for filling possible gaps in knowledge about orthographic pattern learning, including language/literacy assessment profiles of students with the word-structure problems that typify dyslexia and how those problems are influenced by accompanying strengths or weaknesses of vocabulary and related skills needed for oral and written language comprehension and expression. Takeaways include parameters for making intervention decisions in an interprofessional, family-centered, curriculum-relevant environment.

Summary: This session provides a theme-based intervention framework for SLPs who work with toddlers and preschoolers via telepractice. The session begins with a review of the evidence for using theme-based intervention to promote communication development. Next, it discusses best practices for using appropriate technology, selecting toys and digital materials that incorporate themes, and formatting telepractice sessions to keep toddlers and preschoolers engaged while addressing their goals. Finally, it shares tools for successful planning and documentation, allowing participants to leave the session with the knowledge and confidence to begin using themes in your telepractice service delivery immediately. This course is a recorded session from the 2022 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 2162V).
