Summary: The articles in this journal self-study discuss the literacy difficulties many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience, with direct clinical implications for literacy assessment and intervention. The articles, which apply to children across the age spectrum, are from a 2021 forum published in Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, titled “Literacy in Autism—Across the Spectrum.”

Summary: The lived experiences of neurodivergent adolescents and adults reveal that changes are needed in how SLPs approach social communication assessment and intervention. Client-centered protocols for assessing social communication must address two goals: the needs of the student, and the perspectives and behaviors of the student's peers that support or hinder social interactions. Summary: Neurodivergent SLPs (including those with dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, autism, etc.) have unique insights and expertise, making them invaluable assets for fostering client-centered care within speech-language pathology practice. In this session, three neurodivergent SLPs who started their own private practices due to lack of supportive and accessible options discuss employment and supervision barriers. They share systemic and individualistic shifts to support neurodivergent SLPs.

Summary: In this session, the authors briefly review the literature on the developmental risks and auditory effects of pediatric unilateral hearing loss. Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.

Summary: This session explores concrete strategies for how to implement neurodiversity-affirming supports within the current special education landscape. The session reviews strategies for rewriting commonly used terminology, incorporating autistic perspectives, and changing aspects of the school environment to benefit autistic students.
