Summary: This on demand webinar will provide guidelines for dismissal from stuttering treatment to create a safety net for children who stutter. The speakers will discuss common barriers to appropriate discharge and strategies for overcoming these barriers so SLPs can support children to enhance quality of life and develop communication confidence. The webinar will discuss establishing person-centered, individualized, and measurable goals at the time of evaluation; ensuring client-driven and dynamic treatment; using goals to guide decisions about dismissal; and providing ongoing support and maintenance during and following dismissal. Summary: The articles in this journal self-study discuss the literacy difficulties many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience, with direct clinical implications for literacy assessment and intervention. The articles, which apply to children across the age spectrum, are from a 2021 forum published in Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, titled “Literacy in Autism—Across the Spectrum.”

Summary: Noise exposure and aging are common causes of acquired sensorineural hearing loss, marked by damaged hair cells and evident in threshold audiograms. Recent studies have shown that well before overt hearing loss is apparent, a more insidious process frequently occurs, one that doesn’t kill hair cells, but instead permanently interrupts their communication with cochlear neurons. This cochlear synaptic loss can be dramatic, even in ears with normal threshold audiograms, where it has been called “hidden hearing loss.” This webinar will review hidden and overt effects of noise and aging on the ear and hearing, focusing on documented synaptopathic and neurodegenerative outcomes and predicted functional consequences, including speech-in noise difficulties, tinnitus, and hyperacusis.

Summary: Multilingual children are often over- or under-identified as having speech- and/or language-related disorders. This on demand webinar reviews the underlying causes of this disproportionality, the role that SLPs can play in prevention, and the importance of nonbiased assessment. The presenter discusses how SLPs can improve the accuracy of language-related disorder identification in schools by leveraging their unique skill set. The webinar presents a framework for disproportionality prevention as well as information about specific assessment methods.
