Summary: It is well known within our field that identifying voice and upper airway specialized training opportunities and subsequent positions is challenging, competitive, and sometimes elusive. In this SIG 3 activity, various pathways to specializing in voice and upper airway disorders are explored from the viewpoint of different authors at various stages of their careers. The hope is to make the process of specialization more transparent and share components that have contributed to success, while also highlighting the diversity of training and experience that is so important in our field.

Summary: Individuals with hearing loss experience negative psychosocial consequences such as distress, depression, and loneliness. If they also experience excessive negative emotional responses (i.e., confusion, frustration, anger) or reduced positive emotional responses (i.e., happiness) compared to listeners with normal hearing, they might be unmotivated to approach communication situations. This course describes a study whose purpose was to determine the feasibility of using facial expressions to measure emotional responses.

Summary: Background talkers and noise negatively influence speech recognition, but far less is known about the effects of acoustic background competition on speech comprehension and memory. This course discusses experiments that indicate that background voices and noise exert a negative influence on spoken narrative comprehension and memory, even when narratives have been presented at positive signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) that ensured accurate target speech recognition.

Summary: Recent studies have implicated fatigue as an important consequence of listening effort, but the impact of fatigue on children is poorly understood. One problem is the lack of a measure of listening-related fatigue. In this presentation, the presenters (1) introduce the construct of listening-related fatigue, and (2) describe the development and validation of the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale designed to quantify listening-related fatigue. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.

Summary: In order to best serve adolescent students transitioning to post-secondary settings, SLPs have to keep the end in mind. What are students’ college and/or career goals and how can we use current research on what employers want and what entry-level college courses expect to best prepare them for their future? In this session, the speaker discusses tools to modify intervention plans to incorporate current evidence in neurodiversity and self-determination theory as well as strategies for collaboration with a focus on student strengths.

Summary: Behavioral tests for CAPDs can be affected by many factors, including cognition, development, compliance, and language ability, which limits interpretation of test results. This session will discuss electrophysiological testing, which provides an objective method of assessing the neural integrity of auditory processing at multiple levels of the auditory system and can aid in the interpretation of behavioral test results. Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning May 24, 2024) will explore the special education process from referral to dismissal under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as it relates to students with speech-language disorders. The speaker will discuss the role of the SLP, response to intervention (RTI) strategies, and the development of IEPs with specific goals to meet the individual needs of students. Summary: The provision of comprehensive auditory rehabilitation services is critical to successful patient outcomes, yet many audiologists focus primarily or exclusively on amplification due to time, reimbursement, and compliance challenges.
