Summary: The business aspects of health care delivery and resultant SLP experiences, such as increased productivity requirements and disparities in patient access, may feel unfair. Summary: An increasingly diverse United States means that clinicians are encountering more languages in hospital settings. SLPs and audiologists have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure language access—that is, to actively bridge communication challenges between clinicians and patients/families who do not speak, understand, read, or write in the same language. This session discusses language access law and solutions for situations in which a trained medical interpreter is unavailable.

Summary: Modifying diet consistencies is one of the more common approaches to dysphagia care. However, much controversy remains regarding how SLPs tackle decision-making and about the actual modification and measurement of liquids and foods in terms of nutrition and safety as primary goals of dysphagia treatment.
