Summary: Comprehensive auditory rehabilitation for adults includes communication strategies, assistive listening devices, perceptual training, and supportive counseling. The problem-solving format allows an engaging and patient-centered means of addressing communication strategies and counseling needs. This presentation addresses the organization of problem-solving using the problem-solving approach (SOS); distance, angle, reverberation, and noise (DARN); and thinking, emotional response, and action (TEA). Summary: The quality of online medical information can conflict with evidence-based research. Tinnitus is a target for misinformation and bogus treatments due to its prevalence and lack of objective treatments. This presentation discusses a study that assessed how people with and without tinnitus respond to online misinformation regarding tinnitus and determined whether a counseling session regarding causes and management of tinnitus affected susceptibility to misinformation. Summary: Despite advances in hearing technology and intervention, language, academic, and social outcomes in children with hearing loss generally lag behind those of their hearing counterparts. Providing differential diagnoses is challenging, given the cascading effects of auditory deprivation language delays. This presentation identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of effectively making differential diagnoses. Summary: Meniere’s disease (MD) rarely occurs in children. Due to this, care and treatment by knowledgeable clinicians and physicians are lacking. This presentation reviews a case of a 10-year-old male with diagnosed MD, the interdisciplinary approach for care and treatment, the cross-facility approach for obtaining best results, and follow-up hearing aid fitting suggestions for the affected ear. Summary: Health care providers' attitudes toward and skills communicating with people with communication disabilities may affect patients' health care outcomes. This session presents research that suggests providers are aware of these inequities but lack skills and confidence to address them. The session explores how training and other initiatives are needed to help providers better care for patients with communication disabilities.

Summary: Cultural responsiveness is an approach that uses both cultural knowledge/competence and cultural humility to honor a client's culture across all aspects of their treatment and learning. Cultural responsiveness is a fluid approach and requires partnership with a client as well as self-reflection. This micro course explores questions related to cultural responsiveness, like, "What does a culturally responsive interaction look and feel like?" and "How might one situation elicit many different reactions or perceptions?"

This micro course explores questions related to cultural responsiveness, like, "How can I create a practice of self-reflection to enhance my interactions?" and "What are resources I can turn to when I want to develop my competence?"
