Summary: People who experience microaggressions feel a range of emotions, frequently including stress, distress, anxiety, insecurity, and decreased feelings of well-being and self-esteem. What can I do when I am a target of a microaggression? What supports can I access? How can I respond effectively? This course explores the impacts of microaggressions, provides tools for responding, and guides us through practicing effective and empowered communication strategies as well as purposeful empathy and reflection.

Summary: SLPs frequently evaluate and provide rehabilitation services to patients with sudden changes in cognitive status. This session will provide a foundation for understanding delirium—one of the most common reasons for acute cognitive change among older adults. As a symptom of other underlying medical issues, delirium frequently goes unrecognized or is misattributed as a mental health or primary neurologic issue, which leads to inaccurate treatment and recovery approaches. This session will help SLPs recognize delirium and improve early detection and treatment for patients in hospitals and nursing home settings.

Summary: This course is one part of a four-course learning path/course set, Foundations of Effective Supervision. The webinar discusses the challenges of speech-language service provision and supervision during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the needs of clients, supervisees, and clinicians themselves. The pandemic has created many professional challenges for SLPs, including the need to quickly adjust to telepractice for service delivery and supervision, emotional stressors and trauma that may exacerbate clients’ communication difficulties, and vicarious traumatization of clinicians themselves. Summary: Voice disorders are a prevalent and persistent problem in older adults. As the number of people over age 65 continues to increase, SLPs likely will see a growing demand for their services to treat age-related communication problems, including disorders related to the “aging voice.” This webinar will explore the typical age-related changes in each of the three major subsystems involved with voice production (respiratory, laryngeal, and resonatory) and explain how these changes affect vocal quality and ability. The presenters also will discuss appropriate assessment and intervention options, providing an overview of medical, surgical, and behavioral treatments.

Summary: This webinar will walk SLPs through the procedures used in flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES; also known as fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) to evaluate patients with dysphagia. The course will provide a thorough explanation of the laryngeal and pharyngeal anatomy that can be viewed using FEES and guide attendees through exam interpretation.
