Summary: This on demand webinar will provide guidelines for dismissal from stuttering treatment to create a safety net for children who stutter. The speakers will discuss common barriers to appropriate discharge and strategies for overcoming these barriers so SLPs can support children to enhance quality of life and develop communication confidence. The webinar will discuss establishing person-centered, individualized, and measurable goals at the time of evaluation; ensuring client-driven and dynamic treatment; using goals to guide decisions about dismissal; and providing ongoing support and maintenance during and following dismissal. Summary: Individuals who stutter--as well as their families--can experience a range of emotions, thoughts, and interactions around stuttering that can negatively impact quality of life. Summary: Multilingual children are often over- or under-identified as having speech- and/or language-related disorders. This on demand webinar reviews the underlying causes of this disproportionality, the role that SLPs can play in prevention, and the importance of nonbiased assessment. The presenter discusses how SLPs can improve the accuracy of language-related disorder identification in schools by leveraging their unique skill set. The webinar presents a framework for disproportionality prevention as well as information about specific assessment methods.

Summary: Studies on feeding tubes in individuals with advanced illness have raised doubts about the long-term benefit and potential overuse of feeding tubes. SLPs are often asked to offer recommendations about a person’s ability to eat and drink by mouth but may be concerned that restrictions on oral intake could lead to the use of feeding tubes. The boundaries of professional roles are often blurred, further complicating the issue. This course addresses the clinical research surrounding the use of feeding tubes, offers evidence-based practice guidelines, and provides solutions to the challenges facing SLPs with regards to feeding tube overuse.

Summary: Due process hearings are legal procedures established in special education to provide for resolution when the parents and school personnel disagree. This session reviews ethical principles associated with due process and the legal responsibilities associated with being a witness in a due process hearing. Summary: When individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) experience changes in speech, they often look to SLPs for guidance and hope. Summary: This course explores an effective technique for building complex narrative language and thought. By "pressing pause," SLPs and students can take time to talk about and connect "thoughts" (mental states) to elements of story grammar such as initiating events, feelings, and plans. This process is integral for discovering intentions and motivations, perspective-taking, thinking critically, solving problems, and participating in social situations. Speakers also discuss a powerful way to teach "inference" using film "jump cuts."
