Summary: Communication and community are tightly connected, but audiologists don't often know how to apply our knowledge and skills to large populations of people. Audiologists can apply public health concepts to promote healthy hearing for people from all walks of life. This course discusses the field’s roots in public health, core concepts of public health (assessment, policy, and assurance), hearing health disparities, and ways to apply these concepts to support healthy communication in our own communities.

Summary: Older adults must make important decisions about their end-of-life care, and those with hearing and other communication disorders need special accommodations to participate in these important decisions to the fullest extent possible. Summary: Streamed audio has grown from a technological novelty into a distinct listening environment for hearing aid users. This presents a unique listening environment that can prove difficult to verify, as streamed audio is not an external stimulus and cannot be verified using conventional methods. This session describes a new and accessible verification method aimed at the streamed audio environment, ensuring that hearing aid users receive optimal benefit in their digital soundscape.

Summary: Hundreds of medications commonly prescribed for anticancer treatments and some infections are known to cause auditory and/or vestibular dysfunction, known as ototoxicity. This course discusses early detection of ototoxicity through increased awareness, leveraging current tools, and clinical practice approaches for serial monitoring, all of which can provide care teams opportunities to identify adverse effects, modify treatment plans to mitigate hearing loss, and utilize individualized interventions. The speaker discusses strategies for preventing or minimizing cochlear damage to preserve quality of life for patients receiving treatment and to reduce the societal burden of hearing loss.

Summary: This presentation describes the case of a 48-year-old female presenting with vertigo and disequilibrium consistent with mal de debarquement (MdDS) following a weeklong vacation cruise. MRI images, audiometric, and vestibular results are presented, as well as an in-depth review of MdDS and Chiari malformation and their impact on vestibular function and quality of life.

Summary: This course explores factors that contribute to health inequities for individuals who report a hearing loss. Individuals with hearing loss report miscommunication, inaccessible health information, reduced awareness by health care providers, and low patient satisfaction while struggling with inadequate health literacy. The course discusses ideas for rethinking and redesigning our health care, through the guidance of innovative clinics and programs, to address these inequities and care for these individuals effectively.
