Summary: The lived experiences of neurodivergent adolescents and adults reveal that changes are needed in how SLPs approach social communication assessment and intervention. Client-centered protocols for assessing social communication must address two goals: the needs of the student, and the perspectives and behaviors of the student's peers that support or hinder social interactions. Summary: Knowing when, why, and who to refer for central auditory evaluation is challenging, particularly in school settings. This session will address questions that professionals who work in schools or with young people may face: Are there “red flags" for a CAPD? What will I know after the evaluation that I don’t already know? Will results change services? Are we “overtesting/over-referring”? Are there ways to provide screening and/or intervention services that align with school-based RtI/MTSS models of intervention? How can schools screen for processing issues in ways that meet students’ needs and use resources efficiently? After screening, what’s next? Are procedures different across work settings? Summary: Effective communication is a foundational leadership function and a vital characteristic of a competent leader. Given the unique role, leaders play in driving change and leading others through challenges, communication for leaders is much more complicated and nuanced than for individual contributors. Summary: Dyslexia and developmental language disorders (DLD) – relatively common, language-based disorders that affect children’s reading and academic achievement as well as social and life outcomes – frequently co-occur in the same child. This session examines the differences between the two disorders, how to identify children at risk for either or both, and how to provide treatment and accommodations to promote positive outcomes.
