Summary: Drawing from the fields of infant and child development, social cognitive neuroscience, and social psychology, this webinar will focus on enhancing connection, comprehension, and compassion for the social-emotional needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The speaker – a psychologist with expertise in working with children with reduced hearing and their families – will discuss current and relevant science as well as practical, actionable recommendations to support social-emotional functioning for children who are deaf or have hearing loss. Summary: This journal self-study course compares language performance in children with and without cochlear implants from preschool to 6th grade. The articles examine levels of language from phonology to prosody, offering insights into areas of strength and weakness as well as clinical directions. The first article examines consonant acquisition patterns based on hearing exposure. The second and third articles compare morphosyntactic, lexical, and phonological awareness profiles, the effect of literacy on each language skill, and types of errors produced in school-age children with and without cochlear implants. The fourth article explores differences in word-learning strategies that could affect lexical development and offers clinical suggestions based on these findings. The final article explores children’s abilities to discriminate emotional intent based on suprasegmental characteristics in the speech signal.

Summary: SLPs often assess school-age children for speech-sound disorders using a single, standardized test. However, this "one-size-fits-all" approach can yield results that do not account for the impact of speech-sound disorders on other aspects of academic performance. This webinar will describe steps to help SLPs develop clear rationales and clinical decision-making strategies to assess speech-sound skill areas more effectively and facilitate intervention planning.

Summary: Do you wonder why you have children on your caseload who have had the same speech sound production errors for years? Do you wonder what you can do to help the 5th grader who continues to have trouble with the /r/ sound? Do you wonder what happens to these children after they are off your caseload? This webinar will discuss these and other questions that the presenter herself had as a practicing school-based SLP and that she now attempts to solve as a researcher. In this webinar, she will explore the factors that influence language, literacy, and cognitive skills for children with early, persistent, and remediated speech sound disorders. Discussion will include how SLPs can help these children more quickly as well as assessment considerations for ensuring the best outcomes from intervention.
