Summary: Audiologists and SLPs who work in schools and supervise graduate students, clinical fellows (CFs), and assistants need to comply with payer requirements to avoid denials or unfavorable audits that could lead to recoupment and civil or criminal penalties. This on demand webinar will outline the state and federal legal supervision requirements as well as payment considerations when supervising students and support personnel.

Summary: There is evidence that many factors contribute to the varied performance outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients, including etiology and quality of the electrode neuron interfaces (ENI). This course examines a study that investigated the intersection of these factors by analyzing the records and device settings for 156 children with confirmed diagnoses of either enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) or Connexin-26 mutations.

Summary: This course explores the most commonly fit devices for patients whose hearing is significantly poorer in one ear than the other (e.g., single-sided deafness or asymmetric hearing loss) and identify factors that impact device selection and hearing management. Using data analysis and case examples from their clinic, the speakers discuss management options for asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss, including traditional hearing aids, Bi-CROS devices, bone conduction devices (BCD), and cochlear implants (all with or without assistive devices). This course – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 6: Hearing and Hearing Disorders: Research and Diagnostics.
Presenter(s): Deb Culbertson, PhD, CCC-A; Rachel Glade, PhD, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT; Christy Ray, PhD, CCC-SLP; Elizabeth Rosenzweig, PhD,CCC-SLP,LSLS Cert. AVT; Erin Stefancin,MA, CCC-SLP

Summary: This course features moderated discussions among a panel of clinicians who collectively provide cochlear implant auditory rehabilitation (AR) to patients of all ages. Topics and discussions demonstrate the need to expand and differentiate intervention approaches based on the unique needs of individual patients with cochlear implants. Panelists review recent studies, present translational applications, share case studies and examples, illustrate multidisciplinary professional roles, and discuss evidence-based assessment and treatment. This course – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 7: Aural Rehabilitation and Its Instrumentation.

Summary: This on demand webinar will discuss how health care policies affect access to audiology services. The speaker will present the results of a study of (in)equity in access to audiology services in the absence of Medicare reimbursements beyond physician-referred audiology assessments. This webinar – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 8: Audiology and Public Health.

Summary: This session gives professionals a “behind-the-curtain” view of what goes on during a cochlear implant programming appointment to inform their work with children and adults who use these devices. This perspective should be particularly useful when it comes to the management of the hearing aid on the contralateral ear as well as the management of rehabilitative and therapeutic needs. The speaker places special emphasis on how professionals can best communicate with each other to maximize the outcomes for individuals who use cochlear implants. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): Mary O’Leary Kane, MA, CCC-SLP

Summary: Many school-based personnel are unsure how to best support students with cochlear implants, and this session explores how clinicians across settings (clinics and schools) and professions (audiologists, SLPs, and educators) can work together to help students reach their goals. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): William H. Shapiro, AuD, CCC-A

Summary: Many individuals with unilateral cochlear implants are good candidates for a second device. This session discusses some of the roadblocks to sequential or simultaneous cochlear implantation and how to overcome them. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): Heidi Slager, AuD, CCC-A

Summary: Cochlear implant technology has evolved over time to include sophisticated features such as accessory-based and direct streaming, remote control devices and apps, bimodal compatibility, and more – and hearing health providers must become proficient with it all. This session explores working with and efficiently troubleshooting these modern and increasingly common systems, such as remote microphones, DM/FM systems, and mobile devices to improve patient outcomes and increase clinic efficiency. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”

Summary: In general, adults and children who obtain cochlear implants achieve favorable speech recognition outcomes. However, the presence of background noise—even minimal amounts—can negatively impact speech understanding. This session provides an overview of the hearing assistance technologies available for individuals with cochlear implants as well as evidence of the efficacy and effectiveness of the various types. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
