Summary: This course includes five recorded sessions from the 2016 online conference “Maximizing Functional Outcomes for Patients With Dementia.” These sessions focus on key components of functional assessment and treatment of dementia within the constraints of current service delivery models. The conference included a total of 13 sessions, with the broad goal of describing a range of evidence-based clinical care techniques to get to the heart of patient-centered dementia care.
Presenter(s): Blair Richlin, MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS AVEd, TSSLD
Credit(s): PDHs: 0.5, ASHA CEUs*: 0.05
Summary: This session is a case study that focuses on patients and families with diagnosed hearing loss and additional disabilities who participated in aural habilitation/rehabilitation and speech/language intervention focusing on development of listening and spoken language skills with support of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).
Presenter(s): Allison Biever, AuD, CCC-A; Nanette Thompson, MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT

Summary: This session illustrates how telehealth/telepractice can enable professionals to make their services more easily accessible to clients with cochlear implants who are in poor health or live in remote areas where travel is a challenge. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): Andrea Warner-Czyz, PhD, CCC-A; Melissa Sweeney, MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT
Credit(s): PDHs: 0.5, ASHA CEUs*: 0.05
Summary: Children and adults who use cochlear implants and have additional exceptionalities present challenges in diagnostic testing and therapeutic intervention for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. This session reviews current research on communication and quality of life in this population, while also highlighting real-world clinical practices in assessing, treating, and defining success in these patients. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. The session was developed by, and presenters invited by, Audiology Implantables.
Presenter(s): René Gifford, PhD, CCC-A; Lauren Calandruccio, PhD, CCC-A

Summary: Recent studies from the presenters’ laboratory demonstrate a relationship between electrode-to-modiolus distance and channel independence. Specifically, children and adults who use cochlear implants (CIs) (precurved electrodes) demonstrate performance gains up to 12 and 16 channels. The presenters’ working theory is that greater channel independence affords better spectrotemporal resolution. This presentation describes the relationship between spectrotemporal processing and CI outcomes for adult and pediatric CI users. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. This session was developed by, and presenters invited by, Hearing, Tinnitus, and Vestibular Science.
Presenter(s): Regina Presley, AuD, CCC-A, FAAA

Summary: This session discusses the latest advances and updates in cochlear implant technology, including electrode array design, approaches to preservation of residual hearing, the variety of processors and compatible approaches to successful bimodal use, wireless technology, and the array of accessory options available for optimal listening. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): Meghan Ryan, MSL, Health Policy and Law; Neela Swanson, BA

Summary: This session discusses the nuances of cash pay and insurance reimbursement, basics of coding for billing, and how to evaluate an insurance denial. Do you have questions about rate setting for cash pay and the differences in insurance reimbursement? Have you struggled with insurance denials and understanding how to resubmit or appeal? While policies are variable across insurance carriers, this session can help you navigate the common processes involved in billing and payment.
Presenter(s): Sarah Warren, MA

Summary: Medicare beneficiaries are an important patient population to consider when developing a business model, and SLPs in private practice need to know how to enroll in and bill Medicare to ensure they are compliant with federal law. This course walks through the basics of Medicare credentialing, coding and billing, and documentation to ensure successful processing of claims and medical records that will stand up to scrutiny if audited.
Presenter(s): Caroline Arnedt, AuD; Kelly Nichols Starr, MA, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT

Summary: This session will discuss listening and spoken language skills assessments for accurate diagnosis of auditory neuropathy in children as well as various treatment options and considerations, including cochlear implantation. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): Heidi Slager, AuD, CCC-A

Summary: Cochlear implant technology has evolved over time to include sophisticated features such as accessory-based and direct streaming, remote control devices and apps, bimodal compatibility, and more – and hearing health providers must become proficient with it all. This session explores working with and efficiently troubleshooting these modern and increasingly common systems, such as remote microphones, DM/FM systems, and mobile devices to improve patient outcomes and increase clinic efficiency. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
