Summary: Gene therapy offers the promise to correct inherited forms of hearing loss as well as acquired forms such as noise-induced hearing loss, ototoxicity, and presbycusis. However, there are several barriers that must be overcome before such potential can be realized. This course describes the conceptual framework that governs gene therapy today, reveals how this framework has influenced current progress, and discusses a re-imagining of inner ear gene therapy with the goal of achieving outcomes that are clinically relevant and realistic.

Summary: This course features a lively discussion with experts in speech-language pathology and telepractice from Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Italy, and the U.S. Each panelist describes the practice of speech-language pathology in their respective part of the world, highlights the challenges and modifications required in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and discusses the inclusion of telepractice in daily service delivery. Panelists also explore the projected impact of remote delivery models on the practice of speech-language pathology worldwide. Summary: Despite advances in hearing technology and intervention, language, academic, and social outcomes in children with hearing loss generally lag behind those of their hearing counterparts. Providing differential diagnoses is challenging, given the cascading effects of auditory deprivation language delays. This presentation identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of effectively making differential diagnoses. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.

This on demand webinar discusses the acronym MIND (Minority Indigenous Nonstandardized Dialects) and explores the social stigma and unfair treatment individuals often experience due to their language or dialect (known as linguicism).

Summary: Health care providers' attitudes toward and skills communicating with people with communication disabilities may affect patients' health care outcomes. Summary: For stroke survivors with aphasia (SWA), language recovery is highly variable given the extent to which damage may exist in multiple neighboring brain regions. For African American SWA, social determinants of health also contribute to stroke recovery and aphasia rehabilitation, and SLPs can play a vital role in ensuring health equity. This session discusses evidence-based practices that holistically support neurorehabilitation for African American SWA, focusing on assessment, intervention, and culturally competent service provision that targets health-related quality of life and health literacy.
