Summary: Medicare beneficiaries are an important patient population to consider when developing a business model, and SLPs in private practice need to know how to enroll in and bill Medicare to ensure they are compliant with federal law. This course walks through the basics of Medicare credentialing, coding and billing, and documentation to ensure successful processing of claims and medical records that will stand up to scrutiny if audited.

Summary: The experience of trauma or re-traumatization during a person's rehab stay can result in physical, psychological, and emotional health conditions, and can also impede therapeutic rapport, the patient's feelings of safety, and the overall healing and recovery process. This course examines trauma-informed care and its relevancy within SLP practice and discusses ways to implement practical methods of providing trauma-informed care in a health care setting.

The speakers introduce the role of an expert witness, in contrast to the role of a fact witness, and review the qualifications and distinctive roles and responsibilities of an expert witness, with a focus on relevant laws (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, IDEA, and ADA). Summary: SLPs often work with individuals in palliative care to improve their functional abilities related to dysphagia as well as communication, but the SLP’s role in end-of-life processes is more challenging to define. This session explores the unique and rewarding role of the SLP in palliative care and end-of-life processes and describes how SLPs can provide support for swallowing and communication across the continuum of care and with a variety of populations.
