Summary: In order to select the appropriate treatment techniques for oral and pharyngeal dysphagia in adults, clinicians need to understand the physiology of swallowing. This introductory course discusses the principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning as they relate to the effects of injury to the central nervous system and the potential results of swallowing intervention. The presenter discusses examples of neuromuscular treatment for pharyngeal dysphagia and gives tips on analyzing evidence and applying a theory-driven approach.

Summary: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) exist along a spectrum of severity and abilities, with many involving both the motoric and the phonological system. As a result, many children with SSDs experience related issues with the phonological skills needed for word reading and spelling. This session reviews the Simple Views of Reading and of Writing and connects those theories to assessment practices. The speaker discusses ideas for adapting speech sound intervention activities to include phonological awareness, decoding, and spelling.

Summary: Even the most seasoned school-based SLP experiences moments when they stop and say, "Am I doing the 'right' thing?" The question may refer to their adherence to ethical standards or to the legal and clinical expectations of clients and employers. Determining what is "right" should emerge from the SLP's legal and ethical knowledge, so this session focuses on legal and ethical problem-solving across common school-based challenges.

Summary: Inadequate oral hygiene practices can contribute to or result in severe localized and systemic illnesses, significantly altering the health status and well-being of older adults. Care providers must recognize symptoms, conditions, and their potential consequences and elevate routine oral hygiene care to oral infection control programs. This session from the 2017 online conference “Dysphagia in Older Adults” identifies possible oral hygiene complications—from oral pain to pneumonia—and discusses how to recognize and assess them. Speaker John Ashford also addresses the importance of standardized intervention.

Summary: This course explores an effective technique for building complex narrative language and thought. By "pressing pause," SLPs and students can take time to talk about and connect "thoughts" (mental states) to elements of story grammar such as initiating events, feelings, and plans. This process is integral for discovering intentions and motivations, perspective-taking, thinking critically, solving problems, and participating in social situations. Speakers also discuss a powerful way to teach "inference" using film "jump cuts."
