Summary: This session will feature an international panel of speakers discussing cutting-edge issues and research in CAPD. The group will explore what practices from around the world can tell us about optimizing diagnostic evaluation of CAPD, formulating a management plan based on diagnostic evaluation findings, and managing CAPD through improved access to auditory information. Summary: This course discusses the role of teachers in the referral process for children and adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) who speak a nonmainstream dialect. The speaker discusses nonmainstream American English (NMAE) dialects, the role of interprofessional practice within the schools, teacher referrals for special education services, and guidelines that SLPs can use when collaborating with teachers to make appropriate referrals for students with DLD who speak NMAE.

Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.

Summary: SLPs have noted the diagnostic challenge of distinguishing between the clinical indicators of language disorder, language delay based on the impacts of being reared in poverty, and the linguistic variation of students who speak African American English (AAE). Summary: The theme for this SIG 14 course is multicultural considerations in language assessment and autism screenings. Summary: A significant portion of school-age children speak languages in addition to English. To make appropriate diagnostic decisions when there are few available measures, SLPs must conduct assessments that have good classification accuracy and that are culturally and linguistically appropriate. This session addresses questions about assessments for bilingual or multilingual children, such as: How do we know how to select the best test for clinical diagnostic decision-making? Summary: Due to the rapidly changing climate in dysphagia management, adhering to recent changes in billing and documentation standards and procedures can be challenging for SLPs.
