Summary: There are many possible causes for childhood dizziness, which differs from adult dizziness. This session discusses the key components of a pediatric vestibular clinic and its staff, common etiologies of dizziness, risk factors of vestibular loss, and signs of vestibular dysfunction in children. Summary: Acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) typically occurs alongside aphasia. Clinicians are often challenged with questions such as, “What should I work on first, and why/how?” and “How can I deliver intensive therapy in today’s healthcare system?” While there are a number of treatment approaches available for AOS, there are very few large-scale investigations of treatment efficacy to inform practice and limited studies that tackle the issues around intensity and concomitant disorders. This course summarizes the pros, cons, and similarities of impairment-based approaches to treatment for individuals with AOS plus aphasia.

Summary: The Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) is a diagnostic tool used to assess the function of the balance system, specifically the semicircular canals (SCC) and vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR). This on demand webinar will review the anatomy and physiology of these systems, how the vHIT provides ear-specific data for each SCC, and how the vHIT can help diagnose vestibular hypofunction. The presentation will focus on testing pediatric patients, including test modifications and interpretation considerations.

Summary: This journal self-study course is composed of papers from a 2019 Research Forum, Advancing Statistical Methods in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. These selected articles provide advanced-level discussion about clinically relevant statistical methodologies to give speech-language pathologists a stronger foundation from which to analyze and understand the statistical research they come across to decide when and how to apply it in practice.

Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.
