Summary: Down syndrome is a genetic syndrome characterized by unique anatomical and physiological traits; medical complications affecting movement, respiration, feeding, and metabolism; intellectual disabilities; as well as dysarthria and other communication challenges. Summary: This webinar will discuss the anatomical, physiological, neurological, and cognitive factors that affect the speech intelligibility of children and adolescents with Down syndrome. Although there are similarities among people who have this genetic disorder, evaluation and treatment are highly individualized based on specific factors that influence a particular individual’s speech. Summary: Conversion disorder, also commonly known as functional neurological symptom disorder, is a complex and often misunderstood condition that can affect an individual’s communication, cognition, and movement. This webinar will explore all aspects of the psychological disorder, including etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and related issues to inform the SLP’s assessment and treatment of the disorder. The speaker will also discuss the SLP’s role specifically in working with children and teens with the disorder as they complete treatment and return to school.

Summary: SLPs frequently evaluate and provide rehabilitation services to patients with sudden changes in cognitive status. This session will provide a foundation for understanding delirium—one of the most common reasons for acute cognitive change among older adults. As a symptom of other underlying medical issues, delirium frequently goes unrecognized or is misattributed as a mental health or primary neurologic issue, which leads to inaccurate treatment and recovery approaches. This session will help SLPs recognize delirium and improve early detection and treatment for patients in hospitals and nursing home settings.

Summary: With all the developments and changes in aphasia therapy, clinicians can have difficulty keeping abreast of the latest and greatest tools and techniques to ensure they are selecting the best evidence-based treatment option to fit a particular client’s needs and language abilities. This video course uses the ASHA Practice Portal and other resources to explore case studies and apply aphasia interventions to achieve functional goals for adults of all ages. The course identifies candidacy requirements for numerous aphasia interventions, reviews the procedures for using them, and discusses how to fit them into required goal statements and outcome measures.

Summary: Children’s verbal skills differ for many different reasons. Some may have a specific deficit in learning language rules and structures; for others, the differences in expression may result from underlying limitations in memory skills, or in the cognitive control and flexibility needed to plan and monitor communication. This webinar examines how limitations in working memory and other executive functions affect language and learning generally.
