Summary: This session discusses strategies to incorporate AAC throughout a student’s school day to increase their expressive output over a variety of communication opportunities. The speaker presents ideas for creating a systematic integration plan and discusses strategies that can work with low- or high-tech AAC systems to prompt expressive communication initiations, topic maintenance, and appropriate conversation redirection and termination. Summary: Despite advances in hearing technology and intervention, language, academic, and social outcomes in children with hearing loss generally lag behind those of their hearing counterparts. Providing differential diagnoses is challenging, given the cascading effects of auditory deprivation language delays. This presentation identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of effectively making differential diagnoses. Summary: Health care providers' attitudes toward and skills communicating with people with communication disabilities may affect patients' health care outcomes. This session presents research that suggests providers are aware of these inequities but lack skills and confidence to address them. Summary: A culturally responsive professional uses tools and resources to enhance their cultural competence (knowledge), develop their cultural humility to strengthen client relationships, and create interactions that value and honor the individual culture of the client, patient, or student, while working together to reach the individual's goals. Summary: Listening effort is the allocation of mental resources to overcome obstacles in goal pursuit while listening. Sustained increased effort has important developmental implications. Factors that increase access to acoustic cues can reduce listening effort. This presentation addresses the measurement of listening effort, in addition to how language and auditory input affect effort in children who are hard of hearing. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. Summary: Cultural responsiveness is an approach that uses both cultural knowledge/competence and cultural humility to honor a client's culture across all aspects of their treatment and learning. Cultural responsiveness is a fluid approach and requires partnership with a client as well as self-reflection.
