Summary: Written expression is one of the four major modalities (along with listening comprehension, spoken expression, and reading decoding and comprehension) that SLPs need to assess when identifying language and literacy disorders among school-age children and adolescents. This session shares a framework for analyzing the variety of tasks used for written language assessment on standardized tests and considers pros and cons of each to inform decisions regarding eligibility and dismissal. The session includes opportunities to practice applying a multilevel language analysis system to written language samples of students with varied profiles. Summary: This on demand webinar explores how the history of African American Language (AAL) relates to culturally sensitive and responsive practices in communication disorders. The webinar features first-time screenings of several excerpts from “The History of African American Language.” During the webinar, sociolinguist Walt Wolfram and African American Language scholar and SLP Orlando Taylor discuss the impacts of the history of African American Language on clinical practices for professionals working with individuals who speak AAL.

Summary: This SIG 10 activity focuses on student perceptions and experiences. In the first article, the experiences of SLP graduate students who previously worked as Speech-Language Pathology Assistants are compared with students who did not come into their programs with such experience. Implications for prospective students and program development are discussed. Next, authors investigate experiences of students and graduates of clinical doctorate programs, including the application process, their career goals and outcomes, and their general reflections on their decision to pursue the doctor of speech-language pathology degree. Third, authors present an examination of SLPs’ perceptions of graduate students in CSD who speak with vocal fry (a low-pitched, grating voice quality). Finally, in a mixed-method study, graduate and undergraduate students participate in a learning-by-teaching experience in two CSD courses. Three years of data is presented.

Summary: This journal self-study course is composed of papers from a 2019 Research Forum, Advancing Statistical Methods in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. These selected articles provide advanced-level discussion about clinically relevant statistical methodologies to give speech-language pathologists a stronger foundation from which to analyze and understand the statistical research they come across to decide when and how to apply it in practice.

Summary: This course focuses on neurodiversity-affirming practices. Five articles discuss the need for neurodiversity-affirming care; research design and reporting in autism intervention research; knowledge, experience, and training of school-based professionals and their familiarity with early communication access for autistic children; themes in spoken narratives produced by autistic adults whose genders are marginalized; and gestalt language processing.

Summary: Virtual meetings are a blessing and a curse for CSD professionals. While they allow for interactions with participants from different geographies and time zones, they are also often fraught with stressful technical challenges. Many facilitation strategies that are appropriate for in-person meetings fall short given the technical complexities of virtual meetings. Summary: Leaders who proactively manage their careers are often the most successful and resilient. Emerging trends in the CSD profession and the healthcare and education sectors are both a blessing and a curse. For proactive leaders, emerging trends are a source of exciting new opportunities. Instead of waiting for their boss to direct them to take a class or enhance their skills, proactive leaders make a conscious effort to assess, refresh and build their capabilities. Further, when faced with a promotion or expansion of their role, visionary leaders prepare for the transition using strategies to prevent derailment.

Summary: Leadership style encompasses patterns of behaviors when interacting with others and is considered an essential skill for CSD professionals that aspire toward becoming a leader. Leaders who are skillful at adapting their style are self-aware and flexible in how they direct others. In this webinar, participants will be introduced to key concepts associated with leadership styles as well as behaviors and ways to apply it to workplace situations.
