Summary: Effective communication is a foundational leadership function and a vital characteristic of a competent leader. Given the unique role, leaders play in driving change and leading others through challenges, communication for leaders is much more complicated and nuanced than for individual contributors. Leaders who are skilled communicators create mutual understanding, harmony, and action by adapting their communication styles based on situational factors. Harnessing the power to communicate effectively is one of a leader's most critical skills, especially during crises or significant setbacks.

Summary: Acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) typically occurs alongside aphasia. Clinicians are often challenged with questions such as, “What should I work on first, and why/how?” and “How can I deliver intensive therapy in today’s healthcare system?” While there are a number of treatment approaches available for AOS, there are very few large-scale investigations of treatment efficacy to inform practice and limited studies that tackle the issues around intensity and concomitant disorders. This course summarizes the pros, cons, and similarities of impairment-based approaches to treatment for individuals with AOS plus aphasia.

Summary: Principles of motor learning (PML) are guidelines developed for the purpose of training motor execution of movement. Summary: In this SIG 4 activity, authors describe ways to (a) increase speech-language pathologists’ comfort with treating stuttering by providing a structured grouping of activities centered around using education, ease, and empowerment (Gore & Margulis); (b) continue using empirical evidence and clinical experience to make informed decisions about assessment procedures for young children who stutter (Singer & Kelly); and (c) provide holistic speech-language therapy services for stuttering using telehealth (McGill & Schroth). Each of these articles provides practicing clinicians ways to gain confidence in their abilities to provide evaluations and treatment across delivery paradigms.

Summary: While telepractice and tele-AAC services are often thought of as real-time services provided directly to an individual, asynchronous tele-AAC services that include highly individualized and clinically relevant content can be quite effective also. This course explores tele-AAC services as a continuum of support, highlighting the dynamic role of asynchronous tele-AAC in supporting not only the individual (with implementation and generalization, in particular) but also essential stakeholders, including communication partners.
